May 6

It was a very sunny day. I was driving by myself on a lonely road in the middle of a desert in Arizona to visit family. I listened to smooth jazz as I gazed around this desolate area I was driving through. The road felt like it was hypnotizing me into a calm trance.

I saw a car in the distance; this was the only car I had seen for probably 2 hours. As I got closer I noticed it was a very nice bluish colored convertible. As I got even closer I noticed two white women probably in their 30s were in the driver and passenger of the car. They were both prettier than average. They were playing music very loudly and had enormous smiles. It seemed as if both of the women did not have a care in the world. The woman in the passenger seat stood up and screamed excitedly. I was very curious about why they seemed so happy, and what had made that woman so happy that she felt the need to stand up and scream. Both of the women noticed I was behind them and smiled and waved at me. They then sped up and drove away into the distance. They seemed like they had somewhere to be.

  1. Your description matches that of a pair of women that I read about in the paper the other day. I imagine it was them that you saw. Apparently they were on the road running from the law. They were wanted in a couple states, namely for murder and armed robbery. Sure, breaking the law is bad and criminals shouldn’t be admired and all that, but if you ask me, it’s about time we had some strong female outlaws on the getaway. The whole fugitive on the open road narrative is too overpopulated by the stereotypical “rebel without a cause.”

There was an interview with a truck driver in the article I read. He’d seen the women a few times during their journey and made lewd comments and gestures. At some point, the women pulled him off the road under the pretense of a good time, but when he approached them, they told him off for being a pig. When he wouldn’t apologize, they shot out his tires, and, subsequently, blew up his whole truck—if that’s not the best example of vigilante justice you’ve ever heard, I don’t know what is.

  2. These two women truly are a phenomena. When I read the paper I saw that there was a detective so set on saving their lives. It almost seemed as if he was set on saving the social construct of women. People believe that women cannot embark on a journey as such described above. I'm glad that these women felt some form of liberation throughout their journey and broke free of the cage that once held them down.
